Anatomical variations of the renal vasculature and outcome of live donor nephrectomies: experience of a single surgeon

IntroductionRenal artery [RA] variations occur in 18 % to 21%. Variations determine the side selection kidney donors and outcome of Kidney Transplantation. This series reports renal vascular anatomy [RVAS] associated complications encountered during live donor nephrectomies [LDN].Methods Consecutive LDN done by a single surgeon is included, patient's demography, side, RVAS are recorded. The with worse function least number RA selected for LDN. assessed Computed Tomography Angiography intra-operatively. Single vein hilar division considered normal anatomy. Results 159 were included 103 [64.8%] males. mean age was 38.2 years [23-63]. 106 [66.7%] left 136 [85.5%] had these 34 [21.4%] early-branching [EB]. 23 [14.5%] multiple [2 21 3 2]. Therefore occurred 35.8 %. In subgroup analysis 123 veins, only 6 [6.8%] but 9 [25.7%] out 35 arteries or EB veins. difference statistically significant [p-0.004]. 11 [6.9%] [3 bed haematoma]. 2 haematoma patients [5.9% vs. 0.8%] underwent right [3.8% 0.9% / p>0.05].Conclusions Multiple significantly complication rates appear be high. However, this not probably due low numbers.
